Chinese designer Daizi Zheng created a concept phone running on… (what do you think on what?)… on Coca-Cola! The idea is that instead of a usual lithium battery the gadget uses the popular drink.

Coca Cola phone

Well, such environmentally-friendly aspirations (or creative advertising) of famous manufacturers can really make us smile. This time it was the Nokia Company that took the stage. The company has designed an ecologically-friendly phone without a lithium battery that is quite a toxic and dangerous piece that even can lead to explosion. As an alternative the designer has offered to use Coca-Cola as you already know or any other sweet soft drink.

The gadget looks like a cylinder with a fuel tank, liquid reservoir and such conventional phone attributes as display and keyboard. The fuel element generates energy from carbohydrates that basically are sugar in drinks. This process is absolutely environmentally safe. The resulting elements are only oxygen and water. What is more, Daizi Zheng claims that the drink fuel can make phone run 3-4 times longer than traditional batteries.

The question is that whether a Coca-Cola phone is that ecologically-friendly as we don’t know how the Coca-Cola or any other soft drink production influences on environment.

Meanwhile, Coca-Cola phone is just a concept and it’s unknown whether it will have a commercial future.

It is impossible to surprise a modern man with ultra-cool kitchen utensil gadgets as mug heaters, transparent toasters, kettle changing its color as it heats or dishwasher with a washing children toys mode. However, appliances companies keep racing and come out with new unbelievable gizmos.

So say, we’re up to make a nice breakfast in a kitchen packed with up-to-date gimmicks. What do we start with? Right. We open the fridge with built-in monitors with touch-screen and lots of functions. However, what’s inside this marvelous fridge?

DaysAgo Digital Day Counter

First of all, it’s DaysAgo counters that draw your attention. These little widgets are placed on cans and bottles and show days and hours passed since the product was placed in the fridge and unpacked. These little colored “pills” with LCD display and buttons have two types of fastening: magnet and suction caps. It means you can attach these tiny gimmicks to metal, plastic or glass surfaces!

DaysAgo Digital Day Counter

SmartSink from Leonardo Bonanni and Jackie Lee

The next move is washing vegetables. We head straight to SmartSink from Leonardo Bonanni and Jackie Lee. As the title hints the sink is rather brainy. It adjusts to your height and runs water when we reach our hands to it. Moreover, somehow this marvel device recognizes what we wash, vegetables or dishes, and chooses the appropriate water temperature. Also the material the sink is made of protects from bacteria. It’s firm and elastic. And when you drop a plate it doesn’t break.

SmartSink from Leonardo Bonanni and Jackie Lee

New Glide device from George Watson

To make a toast with style is possible is ever! New Glide device from George Watson doesn’t only look saucy. It toasts bread in a very original way! It slowly passes a slice of bread through the toasting element and serves it on a stylish plate! By the way, Watson has received 5 thousand euro at the international contest Ceramics for Breakfast Competition for his smart invention.

Toast cooker from George Watson

Corona-Matic Keyboard Waffle Maker

As for the wafer-iron it has an underlying message in a literal sense. Corona-Matic Keyboard Waffle Maker was created by Chris Dimino from School of Visual Arts in New York. The designer constructed his thingummy from a typewriter!

Corona-Matic Keyboard Waffle Maker

Gastrovac for cooking and impregnating in a vacuum

Another interesting device is called Gastrovac. It’s the brainchild of the Le Sanctuaire company. This 20 kg monster contains 8 liters of water and may be considered as a pan, vacuum “room” and a heating element at the same time! Let’s put inside this widget a sliced pear. Then pour some wine into another section and push the button. Gastrovac evacuates all the air. Then it plunges pears into the wine and restores the pressure. The liquid fills all the cells of the fruit. And now you have a pear with the taste of wine!

Gastrovac for cooking and impregnating in a vacuum

Ok, you can say that those gadgets are way too complicated and expensive. You can do without them. However, microwave ovens have been created though we had ordinary stoves and ovens. But now we cannot imagine our life without them. So may be some of the above-mentioned widgets can become our traditional kitchen utensil gadgets in a while.

Having promised in the beginning of the summer to release an original accessory for portable game console the Irish company, RealView, has kept the word. Basically, RealView V-Screen is a small box that holds the PSP.

So how does it work? The upper lid that covers the PSP’s display holds a special screen that transforms the world of any game. Everything that is happening in the game becomes three-dimensional. Thus it seems that you can touch any object by reaching it with your hand.

RealView V-Screen for Sony PSP

Meanwhile, the official release of RealView V-Screen is planned for the end of December however some reviewers have already tested the “device” and expressed their opinion. All of them agree that RealView V-Screen enhances the effect of presence, indeed, which in its turn affects the realism of the game. However, in practice you’ll have to hold the gadget on eye level so the hands will become numb rather quickly.

On the other hand, RealView V-Screen is a pioneer in this field. So, if it gains popularity among gamers (which is quite likely to happen), the developers will keep on improving it. Therefore, if the price of $40 doesn’t seem to be wasteful for you, check it out!

I’d like to offer the review of a new gadget which is in fact a considerably more complicated gadget than just sWaP Mobile Phone Watch. It is a true embodiment of extraordinary functionality as sWaP Mobile Phone Watch is not only the high-tech watch with multifunctional 1.5 inch color TFT-screen with the 176 x 128 resolution but also it’s an original mobile phone with the Bluetooth technology.

sWaP Mobile Phone Watch

It should be noted that sWaP Mobile Phone Watch is not another phone with watches or vice versa. It’s rather a communicator. In addition to the SIM card support it’s got 1.3 megapixel camera, alarm clock, a slot for a Micro SD card, 512 MB board memory and playback of such formats as MP3, MIDI, WAV, AAC including MP4, plus connection with the Internet. It looks like multimedia functions are not neglected here…

sWaP Mobile Phone Watch

What is more, sWaP Mobile Phone Watch has a 650mAh rechargeable battery that provides the whole 100 hours of standby time or 150-180 minutes of talk time. The set includes stylus with a handy slot and a hands free kit. You plug the latter into the watch and talk all the way through wherever you go!

sWaP Mobile Phone Watch

The claimed price is $ 370. A bit expensive. However, the device can check e-mail, play the music and movies, surf the net as well as make picture and movies (yes, it can!). So the gadget seems to be worth that money. How do you think?

sWaP Mobile Phone Watch

Aren’t you tired of all those shiny glamorous audio players? We’ve seen lots of them. However, changes happen. In present time, we always meet ideas meant to make our lives not only more attractive but also simpler and the world better. And it’s not always the changes must necessarily be ultimate and cardinal by nature. Very often we just have to get back to the past or address to the present to get something really decent. This is what the new Mintpass player is. Mint Cube is an original vintage-stylized concept music player equipped with an FM radio.

Mint Cube music player from Mintpass

The device is created for those users for whom nostalgia is not alien. Nowadays in the era of touch pads and LED displays, Mint Cube boasts with analogue buttons and old school needles shifting when the volumes changes. We all remember cassette players with analogue buttons. We pressed one and it remained squeezed in. And when we pressed another, the first squeezed out. Mint Cube has exactly the same effect!

Mint Cube music player from Mintpass

However this “retro” has found a nice compromise with an up-to-date filling: USB port, earphones jack and Bluetooth module. On the left side it has a battery capacity indicator; on the right panel you’ll find a radio frequency indicator. All in all, Mint Cube is just 50 mm x 50 mm x 50 mm size, so it will perfectly place itself in your backpack as it was meant by the creator, by the way.

Mint Cube music player from Mintpass

Created for men Mint Cube is a smashing toy for gadget savvy geeks and for those who enjoys showing off!

Mint Cube music player from Mintpass

Designers and engineers engaged in designing concepts of cell-phone of tomorrow, surprising us now and then with new intricate combinations of joints and mechanisms.

Please get acquainted with a prototype of cell-phone “Transformer Phone” by Shkinder Maxim. In addition to its the original design, yet another feature of this device is its functionality – “Transformer Phone” can be used as a photo camera or video camera, media player, projector, as well as three-dimensional scanner and holograms reproducer.

It seems after launching a powerful marketing company Quietly Brilliant, HTC decided to become closer and more friendly to the end consumer. Less than a month ago started sales of the HTC Tattoo smartphone. The official price is nearly $400. Is it too much or is it a normal price? Everyone will judge for himself. But I must admit that this smartphone has a much more affordable price than the HTC Hero ( $600 in average).

What makes this device unique? HTC Tattoo has removable panels (probably many you remembered Nokia:)). HTC smartphone positioned as an accessory, which will emphasize your individuality. However Tattoo is not a phone for blondes. Even geeks will enjoy it, because HTC Tatoo can boast with special features Sense UI and platform Android 1.6 (hopefully will be upgraded to 2.0 version in the nearest future).

Simultaneously with the start of sales, HTC launched the site, where you can purchase interesting removable panels for your smartphone, as well as create a unique one with a help of flash-designer. The cost of one cover is 11.99 EUR.

The company BlueRadios has announced the arrival of a new unusual gadget WiPC (Wireless PC). Basically, the gear is a mix of phone, portable music player and computer in one package. What’s the most interesting is that WiPC is equipped with an unconventional micro display. Thus, instead to look at it, you’ll have to put it close to the eye to see what’s there.

The micro display Golden-I has been released by the Kopin company. It has a resolution of 800 x 600 pixels. At the same time, as noted by the developers, the user has an impression as if he looks at a 15-inch monitor. Moreover, the viewing angle makes up 32 degrees. WiPC supports the whole range of software platforms, including Windows CE, Android, Linux and Windows Mobile 7.

Thanks to dual-core processor the unit can play quality D1video. Also, the gadget boasts with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, modem, 2G/3.5G, GPS, FM tuner and TV features. The user can also take advantage of a dial control and optical manipulator.

Without exaggeration, WiPC is very compact and light. Its weight with battery is only 85 grams. In addition, power consumption of this tiny computer is only 1 watt.

Personally, I want it already. How about you?

October 20 saw another brainchild of Apple. It’s an ubercool and fully packed Magic Mouse. It’s an utterly new device. We admittedly bided our time for this incomer.

Official “Better-mouse-philosophy” lacks modesty, obviously. Undoubtedly, Apple knows how Multi-Touch works. Magic Mouse may be rated as first desktop multi-touch mouse. As Apple claims its surface recognizes 5 gestures or finger manipulations. New gestures may easily be added via soft, I suppose. Apple should have thought of that.

Magic Mouse has one button similarly with its predecessor. For “left clicking” you just click any point on the surface. As the Mouse’s “back” is one big button. Whereas, the opening of the right-click menu requires another manipulation. You hold one finger and make a clicking move with another in the right corner.

However, scrolling is likely to become mostly appreciated feature. We all work with documents. Whether it’s web pages, mail, Word docs, whatever. I suppose that the scrolling will do best in browsing big pictures. We can move Magic Mouse in all directions. Not just up and down.

In addition, two-finger practical swiping pages the history. As for Zoom Screen… People, it’s just a far-fetched feature. Hold Control button and scroll to zoom is an old Mac OS function. It’s been a while. And it doesn’t require a mouse.

Regarding the design. As for me personally, it doesn’t work. Mighty Mouse had similar problems. And Magic Mouse seems to embrace them, as well. My hand gets tired. And rather quickly. Many people complain too. Both gadgets have excellent design. And Magic Mouse is something from future. But a mouse must be a gadget to work with not a toy to look at.

Whatever it is, Magic Mouse is another fine fruit from Apple “garden” stuffed with some supercool features.

It’s been a while since we’ve seen any addition from Apple. As it was rumored and well-predicted 5G iPod nano turns out a hot new thing with lots of little wonders to amaze. So what’s so amazing about this new shiny babe? Let’s take for a starter a larger screen (which boasts now of additional 0.2″), a FM radio (what a surprise!), a pedometer, a speaker and, naturally, the main delight must be a video camera. The camera films live video skipping picture stills, however. It makes footage in VGA quality 640 x 480) H.264. As some reviewers claim, the quality surpasses iPhone 3GS. If you feel a rush for creativeness there is a number of special effects including B&W, Sepia, Film Grain, X-Ray, Security Cam, Cyborg, Bulge, Motion Blur, Bulge and so on and so forth. Thanks to the camcorder it became effortless now to switch between landscape and portrait modes. However the placing of lens makes it too accessible, so you’ll have to take some time for practicing to get used to it. Still, it remains quite weird that the 5G iPod nano is now the mid-range (and only) iPod with a camera meanwhile top-notch smartphone hasn’t got this feature.

The dimensions are twin to the 4G nano with 3.6- x 1.5- x 0.24-inches; however it somehow manages to lose its weight from 1.3 to 1.28 ounces. The battery is claimed to last up to 24 hours with playing audio.

The FM radio function Live Pause allows to tag the track you heard on the radio so that the next time you sync, iTunes finds it for you for making a purchase. Other flashy novelty is a pedometer that counts how many steps you’ve taken and how many calories you have burnt while walking.

Finally, the VoiceOver sounds the artist and the track name. Firstly this function appeared in iPod shuffle 3G and has migrated into iPhone and 5G iPod nano now.

With all these novelties introduced, there is much space left for further improvements, of course. But what we have now is something at least.
